Luwero Fruit Processing Factory
Uganda is the second largest producer of fresh fruits and vegetables in East Africa, at about 5.3 million tonnes a year. Pineapple production in greater Luwero is estimated at 1,440,725 MT, which gives the factory a local raw material base. The Government of Uganda, through the Uganda Development Corporation (UDC), plans three processing lines: canned pineapple, dried pineapple and mango, and the ginger-flavoured ready-to-drink juice 'Munanasi'. The factory is a key intervention in the Third National Development Plan (NDP III) and UDC's agro-industrialisation strategy, with a total capacity of 8.5 MT of fresh fruit per hour. The main risks are seasonal raw material supply and competition in the market.
